The Smith BAYLINER AJ is a specialized ajing series from Smith Ltd. A Japanese manufacturer with a long track record in light-game saltwater rods. Ajing serves Japanese horse mackerel (aji) using ultra-light jig heads typically under 5g, making extreme tip sensitivity and lightweight construction the primary design requirements. The BAYLINER AJ addresses these demands with a three-rod lineup that spans ultra-light full-solid to a longer solid-tip model. Blank construction uses 30t and 40t graphite materials.
The BL-551XUL-S/AJ is a full-solid design, the entire blank is solid carbon, which delivers maximum vibration transmission for detecting bites on sub-0.5g rigs. The BL-642L-T/AJ uses a 1.5mm tubular tip on a 30t+40t blank, and the BL-742ML-ST/AJ pairs a 24t solid carbon tip with a stiffer 30t+40t butt for improved casting distance while retaining solid-tip sensitivity. Guides are Fuji titanium-frame SiC-S rings on the upper sections, stainless-frame SiC-S rings through the butt.
Line ratings are designed for ester line in the 0.2–0.4 class, which is standard in Japanese ajing. Length progression runs 5'5" to 7'4", covering tight port fishing with the short UL model up to light caro (Carolina rig) and light float work at range on the 7'4". Power steps from UL through L to ML. All three are 2-piece spinning rods, making them pack-friendly for pier and jetty travel.

Full solid blank from tip to butt; the most sensitive model in the series. At 5'5" It is made for close-quarters port and pier fishing where casting distance is secondary to bite visibility. The solid construction eliminates hollow-blank dampening so even 0.3g jig contacts transmit to the hand.
The longest model; a 24t solid tip over a stiffer ML butt allows casting distance adequate for light caro and float rigs made for aji holding slightly offshore. The stiffened butt compared to the shorter models also improves hook-set authority on longer tethers.
