The Smith Troutin' Spin Dagger Stream is a compact, multi-piece telescopic trout rod designed for small streams and technical creek fishing in Japan. It fits anglers who need a packable rod that collapses to roughly 36–37 cm for access in tight riparian environments. The intended quarry is stream trout, yamame, amago, iwana, using micro lures. The moderate action across all models prioritizes a wide usable lure-weight window over tip speed, making it forgiving with low-weight spoons and minnows. All models are 6-piece telescopic blanks with solid carbon construction in the tip section only (not full-solid), which balances sensitivity with appropriate flex for small fish.
Guides are SIC-S / stainless steel frame; grip is downlock-style to save length and weight. The TEC variants are baitcasting (trigger seat) while the TES variants are spinning; otherwise the two share identical lengths and specs. The new L-power models (DS-TEC47L, DS-TEC50L, DS-TES47L, DS-TES50L) extend the lineup to slightly heavier presentations, small minnow plugs and heavier spoons. Lengths run 4'7" / 5'0" / 5'5", covering near-pocket to moderate-distance stream casting. The 4'7" models are best for enclosed canopy creeks; 5'5" suits wider streams.
The UL-power builds are limited to roughly 1–6g; the newer L-power entries push to around 8–10g. No spinning/casting split at the 5'5" length for L power (only 5'0" and 4'7" offered), suggesting the longer L rod was not considered necessary for the target application.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest baitcasting entry, collapses smallest, suited to heavily canopied creeks. The 4'7" length restricts backcast room but keeps the rod manageable in dense riparian brush. Baitcasting format (TEC) unusual at this size; favored by anglers preferring BFS setups.
New addition stepping up to L power in the 4'7" baitcasting format. Widens the lure range for slightly heavier minnow plugs and larger spoons without changing the pack-size. Useful where larger trout are present but stream width remains limited.
