The K. O. Z Expedition Spinning Model is a high-end offshore/expedition casting series from Smith Ltd. Japan, supervised by big-game angler Kozo Okubo. It is built for power spinning in international saltwater and freshwater settings, GT, tuna, bluefin trevally, tarpon, barramundi, giant peacock bass, where anglers cannot rely on having the right conventional gear and need a spinning rod that can generate and sustain extreme fighting pressure. All blanks use 8+24+30-ton 4-way X-across graphite (multi-axis carbon), three-modulus layup with cross-bias wraps to simultaneously maximize power, blank recovery, and twist resistance.
Guide trains use Fuji SiC KT+KL frames on lighter models (single-foot for weight savings); heavier GT/tuna models (S76BTH, S81BTM) get triple-wrapped guides for additional strength. Reel seats are anti-slip treated aluminum with long-nut locking. Distinctive orange EVA separate grip throughout the lineup. Models are 1-piece, 2-piece, or 3-piece depending on packed-length requirements. Nine spinning rods, 6'8"–8'2". The series runs from super-light (S68SL/2 made for 2–30g lures) through XH moderate (S76BTH, up to 300g / PE10) for century-class GT.
The S74YT is the yellowfin tuna/tarpon model at 28–130g; S80BGT serves bluefin tuna and giant amberjack at 30–200g; S77GT/3 is a 3-piece travel variant for GT expeditions that packs to 82 cm.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Entry of the series at 2–30g and PE 0.6–2. Designed for seabass, arowana, and small peacock bass with lightweight jigs and minnows. Two-piece. Despite 'Super Light' designation this is still a saltwater-capable stick, outside the freshwater finesse rod lane.
YT = yellowtail/yellowfin tuna. Lure range 28–130g, line PE3–8. The variable 2-piece design with soft tip allows 1 oz surface lures to be cast while the butt can stop large tuna runs. The 315g blank weight reflects the power requirement.
BTH = big trevally/heavy. Rated to 300g lures and PE10 line, weighs 420g. Moderate action loads deeply across the blank to absorb 50+ kg GT runs. Triple-wrapped guides. This is among the heaviest shore-based spinning rods commercially available.
Three-piece travel variant packing to 82 cm for airline carry-on. GT-rated at PE6–12 and 100–300g lures. The 3-piece breakdown makes this viable for remote-island or fly-in GT expeditions without checking specialized rod tubes.
BGT = big GT (bluefin tuna/giant trevally). 30–200g lures, PE5–15. At 398g, this is a rod for sight-casting large poppers and stickbaits to bluefin tuna from shore or boat. Softer tip than BTH variants for better lure action.
