Dark Shadow EX

Smith's Dark Shadow EX is a Japanese ajing/light-plugging series built specifically for fishing small hard-body plugs (2–14g) in saltwater light-game contexts, primarily made for horse mackerel (aji) and seabass from shore with micro-plugs. The design intent is distinct from worm-and-jighead ajing: the tip is tuned to properly load and work small treble-hooked plugs without overpowering them, while the belly and butt deliver enough power to connect hooksets on aggressive fish. The 'EX' designation signals an evolution of Smith's earlier Dark Shadow line.

Blank is a 2-piece graphite construction with a fast action that creates a clean tip-to-mid flex for plug animation while maintaining hook-setting authority. Lure ratings of 2–14g (spinning) and 2–9g (lighter casting models) are tight, consistent with specialized micro-plug tools. PE line ratings are light: #0.3–0.6 for most spinning models, slightly heavier for casting. The fast tip recovers quickly after lure movements, which is critical for reading subtle plug behavior and registering bites on small treble hooks.

Four models: two spinning (7'3" L and 7'10" ML) and two casting (7'4" L and 7'11" ML). Length increases by 5–7 inches between the shorter and longer pairs, providing a short-range precision option and a longer-reach option within each style. The L-power models handle the finest presentation; ML adds range for slightly heavier work. Both styles fill a narrow niche and are not general-purpose rods.
