The Smith MAGNUM HUSKY NEX is a snakehead-dedicated casting rod series built for tropical and subtropical freshwater fishing made for giant snakehead (toman) and related predatory species. Smith designed the NEX as an update to the MAGNUM HUSKY KOZ line, with a focus on improving operability in heavy rigs while reducing blank twist under load, a common complaint with high-power hollow-frog rods. Blank construction combines UD glass fiber with 24t graphite, a hybrid that provides the abrasion resistance and shock tolerance needed for fishing thick vegetation, overhanging canopy, and dense mat cover where snakehead are commonly found.
The glass content also moderates the overall stiffness to give the tip enough flex to work surface frogs and soft lures during the pause, while the graphite content keeps weight reasonable. All models are 1-piece casting rods with full-grip handles approximately 590mm in length, suited for two-handed pitching and hauling fish out of cover. Moderate Fast action runs across all three. The lineup spans 7'4" to 7'6" in H, XH, and XH power, with the heaviest 7'6" XH model intended for open-water ponds where longer casts are required.
The H-power 742H covers lighter cover applications, while the SH-class 752SH and 762XH step up for dense mat and wood cover where a short hook-set must pull fish immediately. Line ratings are PE 6–10 class throughout, reflecting the PE braid standard in Southeast Asian snakehead fishing.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Entry-level power in the NEX series; 7'4" H-power suits lighter cover situations and open ponds where fish are not locked into thick mats. More manageable tip flex than the SH/XH models makes it the better choice for working surface frog pauses in moderate vegetation.
Longest and stiffest model; the 7'6" length combined with XH power is intended for open pond situations requiring maximum casting range. The additional length increases hook-set leverage at distance compared to the 7'4" and 7'5" options.
