SS4-Custom

The Smith SS4-Custom is a compact four-piece baitcasting rod designed for mountain stream trout, tenkara-adjacent bait finesse fishing in tight, technical environments such as headwater streams where casting room and rod storage both demand very short gear. The "SS" designation stands for Super Short; the "4" denotes four-piece construction. It is a signature series developed with the input of Japanese stream angler Hiroyuki Motoyama and is sold as the top of Smith's trout baitcasting range. All three models use 24-ton+30-ton combined graphite blanks with an unsanded finish, a choice favored in JDM trout rods for a slightly softer, more through-loading feel.

Guides are Fuji titanium frame Torzite throughout, with a micro K-guide top. The wood reel seat is a deliberate aesthetic and functional choice, providing a warmer grip feel and allowing the blank to resonate more freely. Lure range is 1–7 g; line weight 2–6 lb, confirming this is a light-game instrument. A built-in neodymium magnetic hook keeper on the front cork section is a practical field detail. All three are Moderate action, which promotes feel for tiny lure movements and softer hooksets suited to small hook trout techniques.

Lineup is three baitcasting models, 4'7" (47UL), 4'9" (49UL), and 5'1" (51UL), all UL power, all Moderate action. The incremental length steps of 2" each give anglers choice based on stream size and casting distance requirement. Spinning models is absent. The folded lengths (39.5–44.5 cm) keep the assembled rod compact enough to carry to remote locations.
