The VPR is Star Rods' multi-application saltwater lineup combining inshore spinning, conventional boat, and surf spinning models under a single series umbrella. Blanks use high-modulus multi-directional graphite with nano resin and a nano-reinforced butt weave, which Star claims improves strength-to-weight ratio over their standard blank construction. The series covers a wide range of applications from light inshore spinning (VI prefix) to heavy surf casting (VS prefix) and conventional boat fishing (VB prefix), making it more a platform family than a focused technique rod.
Inshore models (VI) use Fuji KL-H SiC guides and a Fuji blank-touch reel seat; boat models (VB) use Fuji K-frame tangle-free SiC guides and feature carbon PowerButt ends and notched EVA foregrips for rod holder use and boat-side handling. Boat conventional models include aluminum gimbals. Select cork handles appear on inshore models. The range of power ratings (ML to XXXH) and lengths (7'–11') means there is limited coherence across the full VPR offering. It is a label applied to multiple market segments.
The 21-model lineup separates into: VI inshore spinning (7' and 7'6", ML–H, 4 models), VB conventional boat (6'6"–7', ML–H power, 8 models), VS surf spinning (8'–11', M–MH power, 5 models), and VI inshore spinning continued. Boat conventional models do not list lure weights, suggesting natural bait use. Surf models do not list lure weights consistently, showing varied surf rig applications.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Heaviest conventional boat model at 30–50lb, targeted at larger inshore species or nearshore bottom fishing with natural bait. Amberjack, large grouper, heavy live lining applications from a boat.
Lightest inshore spinning model at ML power and 6–14lb line. Suited to speckled trout, smaller redfish, and flounder on jigs and soft plastics in shallow coastal systems.
Shortest surf spinning model at 8'. While labeled surf, this spec range also suits pier fishing or rocky shore casting where maximum length is impractical but some additional reach beyond a 7' inshore rod is still useful.
Longest surf model at 11' MH with lure ceiling of 8oz. Addresses heavy surf rigs and pyramid sinker setups for distance beach casting where rod height and cast weight are the primary factors.
