The GCX Salmon Hotshot is G. Loomis's premium platform for back-bouncing, hot-shotting, and plug fishing for Chinook and coho salmon in large Pacific Northwest rivers. The series serves experienced river anglers who fish from boats using conventional (baitcasting) reels to back-troll or anchor-and-drift plugs and lures down to holding fish. The XF (extra-fast) action in both models emphasizes expressive, load-sensitive tips that telegraph plug action and absorb violent strikes.

Blanks are GCX-grade graphite, rolled entirely at G. Loomis's Woodland, Washington facility. Stepped mandrels with micro-tapers reinforce areas likely to fail under load. Fuji Concept O guide trains are used throughout. Seaguide reel seats include Fuji double-locking nuts for secure conventional reel attachment during high-current fishing. Lightweight carbon trolling handles reduce fatigue during long sessions. The design reflects Pacific Northwest salmon guide culture.

The two-model lineup splits on blank length and target duty: the GCX 1021-2C HSR is 8'6" ML power rated for 10–20 lb line and 3/8–4 oz, suited to medium-sized rivers and standard plug sizes; the GCX 1084-2C HSR is 9'0" H power rated for 15–30 lb and 1–6 oz for large rivers, heavy flows, and the biggest plug presentations made for large Chinook. Both are two-piece casting rods.

Deeper Dive

A closer look at notable models.

GCX 1021-2C HSR Casting · 8'6" · ML · XF action

The 8'6" ML is the lighter option, built for medium rivers, smaller plugs (Wiggle Warts, small Hot Shots), and coho or smaller Chinook where rod sensitivity to plug action is critical. ML power allows the tip to load correctly with lighter lures.

GCX 1084-2C HSR Casting · 9'0" · H · XF action

The 9'0" H-power steps up for large rivers with heavy current, big plugs, and trophy Chinook. The heavier power is needed to move 4–6 oz lures effectively and to apply enough pressure to turn large fish away from snags in fast water.
