The G. Loomis Salmon Series Spinning is a specialized mooching and ocean trolling rod for Pacific salmon anglers who prefer spinning reels. Mooching, slow-trolling or drifting cut bait or herring in saltwater, is a primary technique for chinook and coho salmon along the Pacific Coast, and this rod accommodates the sustained load of deep-water mooching as well as casting heavier spoons and spinners in river settings for the same species. The spinning configuration addresses anglers less comfortable with conventional mooching setups.
The rod provides substantial backbone capable of handling large salmon including chinook and coho, silvers, chums, and pinks. The heavy power blank with moderate action absorbs the runs of large fish while providing the sensitivity needed during slow presentations. According to G. Loomis, the rod will handle up to 6 oz when mooching or trolling, though its effective casting range is limited to about 1/2–1 1/2 oz. Grade-A cork handles are standard. The SAR 1084 S is the single model in this spinning configuration: 9'0", heavy power, moderate action, rated for 10–25 lb line and 1/2–1 1/2 oz on the cast.
The 9-foot length provides leverage for fighting large ocean salmon and reach for plunking or drift fishing in larger rivers. The Salmon Series is a legacy line within G. Loomis's catalog, sold as a specialized tool instead of a multi-technique freshwater rod.
