Ocean Gate Tako

The Ocean Gate Tako is a two-model baitcasting series built specifically for octopus (tako) fishing, a boat-based bottom technique popular in Japan's coastal waters. The XH model (6ft, MAX80号 sinker) uses an Extra Fast action; the H model (7ft, MAX60号 sinker) uses a Fast action. Neither specifies a line rating, as octopus fishing typically uses heavy fluorocarbon or nylon leaders rather than PE mainline. Rod weights are 119g and 141g.

Sinker weights are expressed in the Japanese 号 (go) unit: MAX80号 equates to approximately 300g and MAX60号 to approximately 225g. This weighting reflects the need to hold bottom in tidal current while working the eggi or rubber octopus lure with short lifts and drops. The Extra Fast action on the XH model provides a crisp lifting tip for the quick upward stroke that triggers octopus strikes.

The Tako series is priced identically at ¥17,050 for both models, making it one of the most affordable specialist boat series in the Ocean Gate range. It fills a niche that few non-Japanese brands address with purpose-designed rods.
