Makaira Abalone

The Makaira Abalone is Okuma's premium big-game trolling rod series, designed for stand-up and conventional offshore trolling made for marlin, bluefin tuna, large sharks, and broadbill swordfish. The 'Abalone' designation refers to the decorative abalone inlay beneath the foregrip, a cosmetic marker of the series' position at the top of the Makaira lineup. These are specialized IGFA-class trolling rods, not casting or jigging tools. Blanks use carbon composite construction and are fitted with ALPS deep-press 316 stainless guide frames and ALPS roller guide inserts for low-friction line management under sustained trolling loads.

Custom ALPS aluminum reel seats with abalone underlay are specific to this series. Full straight or bent aluminum rod butts with aluminum gimbals for fighting belt and rod holder compatibility. Shrink tube grips for durability in harsh offshore conditions. Rod weight is notable, the XXH stands around 27 oz, reflecting the heavy-duty offshore construction. Not comparable to lightweight jigging rods. Six models, all conventional (casting), spanning 5'8" to 6'0". Powers run from H (30–80 lb line on the 6'0" H model) to XXH (50–120 lb on 6'0" XXH).

The two 5'8" and one 5'10" models represent shorter stand-up configurations for heavy fish in close-quarters situations. The three 6'0" models carry explicit line ratings from 30–80 lb through 50–120 lb, covering IGFA 30, 50, and 80 lb class fishing respectively. All actions are moderate-fast, consistent with trolling blank design.
