19 Protone Tuna
Offshore tuna casting rods set up for 50, 80 and 110 g plugs, on PE 5 to PE 10
Protone Tuna is Olympic's offshore casting series for tuna, released in 2019. Every model uses Torayca T1100G with a full-length 4-axis woven cloth and Olympic's G-MAPS construction, which Olympic describes as a heavily reinforced blank built for casting distance and the butt power to hold and lift a running fish. The number after each model code is the lure weight the rod is set up to work, 50, 80 or 110 g, and Olympic states each model also handles heavier plugs.
The two 8-foot rods are the 802-50, rated for plugs to 100 g on PE 5, and the 802-80, rated to 130 g on PE 6. The 8'6" 862-110 is the heavy model, for plugs to 180 g on PE 10, at 420 g. All three are 2-piece with a detachable grip for transport.
Guides are stainless-frame throughout, MN guides with SiC rings and KW guides with SiC-S rings, all double wrapped. The 802 models use a Fuji DPS20 reel seat and the 862-110 a DPS22, both with double lock nuts against a reel working loose. The round grip end is shaped to sit against the stomach or hip during a fight, EVA on the 802 models and Fuji BRC on the 862-110.
Shaded band: the spread of the lineup's 3 models, as percentile rank among same-type rods. Solid line = series median · dashed ring = catalog median.
