The Phenix Abyss HD is a heavier-duty offshore and nearshore rod series targeted at anglers fishing surface iron, live bait, and big-plug presentations primarily on the West Coast. It is available in both casting (conventional) and spinning configurations and is built to handle line classes from 10–25 lb up to 20–50 lb, covering a range of applications from lighter kelp-bed live bait work to full-scale yellowtail and tuna iron casting. Blanks use an S-glass composite blended with Mitsubishi Core Carbon Fiber, a construction that combines fiberglass flexibility and strength with carbon's weight reduction.
Hardware includes a Fuji DPS reel seat with a custom ring, Fuji FazLite guides, and a custom corded rubber grip designed for sustained casting comfort. The carbon-fiber reinforced core increases the series' lifting and fighting power relative to the standard Abyss. The 13-rod lineup includes 10 casting and 3 spinning models. Lengths run 7'2" through 8'9". Within each length, models differ by line class, most lengths offer two or more options stepping from lighter (10–25 lb) to heavier (20–50 lb) duties.
The 8'2" casting class is the most fully developed with four models (AHD-C 826 through 829) covering the full line range. Spinning models mirror the 7'2", 7'8", and 8'2" casting lengths in their heaviest configurations, giving spinning-reel users access to the core blank lengths.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Same 7'2" length as 727 but rated 20–50 lb. For bigger yellowtail, tuna, or heavy iron at short range. The heavier blank moves up to braid in 40–65 lb class on conventional gear.
Entry casting length in lighter configuration. 12–30 lb line for medium-duty live bait or surface iron work close to structure. Shorter blank is more manageable on boats with restricted deck space.
Shortest spinning model. Suits spinning-reel iron or live bait work at 12–30 lb. Compact enough for boat fishing and useful for anglers who prefer spinning gear for surface-iron retrieves.
Lightest of four 8'2" casting models. 10–25 lb suits lighter surface iron or live mackerel/sardine presentations. 8'2" blank length aids casting distance on the iron.
Heaviest 8'2" casting model at 20–50 lb. Full-duty offshore work on large pelagics. The 8'2" platform with heavy-duty S-glass/carbon construction handles sustained pressure from big fish.
Longest model in lighter configuration. Extra length boosts casting distance for iron and distance live bait presentations. 12–25 lb line suits lighter tackle in open-water casting scenarios.
