The Phenix Cicada is a surf and light-shore casting rod series designed for salmon, striped bass, redfish, and other large inshore or nearshore species from the beach, jetty, or high bank. It covers both conventional (casting) and spinning applications in longer rod lengths, 8' through 10', at line weights from 6–40 lb, accommodating techniques from light surf minnow casting to heavier bait and jig work. Blanks are built from 30-ton Toray carbon fiber with Phenix Nanolite proprietary resin, a construction made for reducing blank weight while retaining load-bearing strength for long casting and hard fighting.
Guides are Fuji FazLite, which save meaningful weight on a long rod. The handle uses AAA-grade Portuguese cork on the foregrip and a shaped carbon fiber solid rear grip that Phenix describes as ergonomic and counterbalanced to reduce fatigue during extended surf sessions. The 13-model lineup splits into 8 casting rods and 5 spinning rods. Casting models span 8'–10' with line ratings from 6–12 lb (lighter surf finesse) up to 15–40 lb (heavier duty). Spinning models run 8'6"–10'.
Within each style, models are differentiated by length and line class: lighter line weights (6–12 lb class) handle smaller surf presentations, mid-range models (8–17 lb) serve as all-around inshore blanks, and heavy models (10–30 lb and 15–40 lb) are set up for larger bait or jig work. All models are 2-piece.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Lightest spinning model. Finesse surf work with spinning reels on 6–12 lb or light braid. Useful for smaller salmon, trout, or bass in calmer inshore conditions.
Lightest-rated casting model in the 9' class. Covers lighter surf presentations and small lure work for salmon and bass in relatively calm conditions. 6–12 lb rating suits light mono or 20–30 lb braid on a conventional setup.
Same length as 905 but heavier duty at 10–30 lb. More appropriate for bigger bait, heavier jigs, and strong tidal or surf conditions requiring additional backbone.
Heaviest 9'6" casting model. 15–40 lb line with extra length for distance casting in heavier surf. Suited to large bait presentations and striper or king salmon from high-energy beach environments.
Longest spinning model. 10' reach and 10–30 lb rating for demanding surf conditions with spinning tackle. Handles heavier plugs and a wide range of inshore applications at maximum casting distance.
Heaviest and longest casting model. 10' blank and 15–40 lb line class covers long beach casts with substantial bait rigs or large plugs. Counterbalanced grip design is particularly useful at this length.
