Ultralight and trout-specific freshwater spinning series from Phenix Rods, sold as a premium option for the serious light-tackle or fly-adjacent freshwater angler. Primary applications include trout on streams and small lakes, panfish, and light finesse bass work, anything requiring sub-1/4 oz presentations with small spinning gear. Phenix serves the angler who wants California-made quality and premium aesthetics at a price step below their flagship inshore saltwater lines. The distinctive cork-and-burl-wood grip blend is a visual identifier.
Blanks use Phenix's Net V Advanced Carbon Fiber construction, a proprietary lay-up using high-modulus carbon and advanced resin technology made for minimising blank mass while maintaining durability. The result is a rod that Phenix describes as one of their lightest and most sensitive freshwater designs. SiC guides throughout for smooth line flow on mono, fluoro, or light braid. Metal up-locking reel seat hood. The cork-burl wood grip combination is uncommon in production rods and reflects an aesthetic-craft orientation that separates this series from standard utility ultralight rods.
Four models, all spinning, across 8'0" and 9'0" lengths. Three use F (fast) action: DFX-S801 (8'), DFX-S901 (9'), DFX-S903 (9', possibly a different line weight or guide configuration within the same length, details not fully confirmed). One model, DMX-S801, is 8'0" with M (moderate) action, better suited to crankbaits, spinners, or techniques requiring a loading parabola that a fast-action blank cannot provide. All are rated 1–7 lb line. Casting models is absent. This is spinning-only.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Only moderate-action model in the series; the softer taper loads on lightweight lures like small inline spinners or crankbaits where a fast-action blank would not bend into the fish. Better for keeping treble-hooked fish pinned.
One of two 9' fast-action models; longer length aids reach on stream presentations and improves line-mending for drift fishing. Exact differentiation from DFX-S901 not confirmed from available sources.
